Overview

As AI becomes increasingly used in the criminal justice and immigration systems, the Vera Institute of Justice (Vera) is committed to promoting the accountable use of AI: systems that produce fair, just, and equitable outcomes that help end the criminalization and mass incarceration of people of color, immigrants, and people experiencing poverty. To achieve this, Vera recommends five accountability principles to serve as a guiding framework and overarching lens for decision-making related to AI: 1) limit AI use to shrinking the footprint of mass incarceration; 2) define clear AI objectives; 3) require rigorous human oversight of AI systems; 4) center community-defined public safety priorities when adopting AI; and 5) disclose AI use to the public.
