Vera Institute of Justice
SEE JUSTICE is a Vera speaker series that aims to illuminate a vision of our justice system that respects the dignity of every person and safeguards justice for everyone.
The series features visionaries who not only share this goal but whose work is making it real in the lives of people across our country.
Up next is a presentation by Scott Semple, Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Correction. Connecticut is leading reforms in criminal justice reform – including proposals to raise the age of criminal responsibility for young people from 18 to up to age 21 and creating a new facility for them, a focus on rehabilitation in prison, and easing reentry by converting former prisons into “reintegration centers,” among other things. Commissioner Semple is part of the team that has been at the forefront of this work, which was featured in a recent New York Times editorial, and will share the motivations and the mechanisms for these powerful reforms.
