Justice was on the ballot in New Orleans and we chose six new criminal district court judges, two new juvenile court judges, and a new district attorney. Vera New Orleans is ready to work with you to bring more transparency to the criminal legal system and help hold the system and its leaders accountable.
Here's what we did this year:
- Guidance and advocacy to respond to COVID-19 which resulted in a 25% jail population reduction
- Providing technical assistance to city government in pursuit of alternatives to jailing people with serious mental illness
- Raising awareness and creating resources about the role of district attorneys in justice system reform
- Advocacy to end the imposition of court fees on people caught in the system
