The justice system is characterized by a profound lack of transparency. In many places we do not have accurate, up to date information on how resources are deployed, the people who are arrested, what happens to them once they enter the justice system, or the extent to which the money in your pocket or the color of your skin influences the outcomes of your case. Advances in data collection and analysis hold the promise of increasing transparency and accountability. However, the stakes are incredibly high and an array of advocates, data scientists and researchers have sounded the alarm about the potential negative consequences of relying on big data and algorithms to guide justice reform.
In this panel, Vera will convene some of the leading commentators on technology and justice reform to tackle these important issues. Vera’s Research Director Jim Parsons will be joined by Cameron Brien (Managing Director, Goldman Sachs), Cathy O’Neil (author of Weapons of Math Destruction), Rachael Weiss Riley (Director, Data Clinic, Two Sigma Investments), and our moderator, Jeannette Wing (Avanessians Director, Data Science Institute, Columbia University).
