Vera seeks to ensure that no detained immigrant will face deportation without legal representation through our work on the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), our participation in the California Coalition for Universal Representation (CCUR), and our efforts to replicate locally-funded counsel programs nationwide. To keep families together and communities strong, cities, states and other local jurisdictions are, and should be, funding counsel for immigrants facing deportation who cannot afford a lawyer.

Project Objectives

  • By providing counsel to immigrants who cannot afford a lawyer, NYIFUP and CCUR seek to strengthen immigrant communities and maintain families’ social and economic stability.

  • NYIFUP has created a model for representation that is replicable across the country.

Key Fact

More than 7,000 U.S. citizen children lost a parent to deportation between 2005 and 2010.
