The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) and the California Coalition for Universal Representation (CCUR) seek to ensure that no detained immigrant will face deportation without legal representation. Building on the work of these projects, in 2017, Vera and local leaders launched the SAFE (Safety and Fairness for Everyone) Cities Network—a network of cities, states and other local jurisdictions funding legal representation to immigrants in deportation proceedings. To keep families together and communities strong, cities, states and other local jurisdictions are, and should be, funding counsel for immigrants facing deportation who cannot afford a lawyer.

Project Objectives

  • By providing counsel to immigrants who cannot afford a lawyer, NYIFUP and CCUR seek to strengthen immigrant communities and maintain families’ social and economic stability.

  • NYIFUP has created a model for representation that is replicable across the country.

Key Fact

More than 7,000 U.S. citizen children lost a parent to deportation between 2005 and 2010.
