IDJJ seeks to develop an evidence-based system of graduated responses to behavior for young people released from facilities. The goal of this system is to develop a structured, decision-making framework that would help determine each individual young person’s needs upon release.

The department’s existing aftercare system has already demonstrated a commitment to best practices. Still, the IDJJ recognizes there is room for improvement. Vera will oversee a yearlong project to further inform the partnership of national best practice around supervision levels, risk and need principles, and using validated assessment tools.

Additionally, Vera will create a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) to provide feedback to the department from youth themselves, and tweak the system in the future accordingly.
