Vera is already working on a number of initiatives as part of Greater Justice New York. In New York City, we piloted an innovative experiment in the arraignment courts to encourage the use of more affordable forms of bail and played a key role on the “Rikers Commission,” formally known as the Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform. Statewide, we have conducted trainings on bail and provided expertise on bail reform to hundreds of judges, criminal justice stakeholders, advocates, and community members in places as diverse as Albany, Buffalo, and Cortland County. In 2018, we will continue our policy and practice initiatives by influencing statewide criminal justice reforms in Albany, piloting a project in the Bronx and Queens to assist judges with taking into account a person’s ability to pay when setting bail, developing a new model of misdemeanor justice in Manhattan Criminal Court that provides a person access to primary care and services that promote stability instead of jail, and partnering with criminal justice reformers in Brooklyn to shape a new vision for prosecutorial justice there.
