Vera has worked on the following projects to ensure more equal access for people with disabilities:

Accessing Safety Initiative

Through the Accessing Safety Initiative, Vera worked with dozens of jurisdictions to enhance their capacity to assist women with disabilities and Deaf women who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Via a partnership in 2006 with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women, Vera provided intensive consulting and training on federal initiatives to improve services for these women. The goal was to increase victim service agencies’ knowledge, skills, and resources to ensure more equal access to these services. In turn, the project sought to help disability organizations offer safe and responsive services to survivors of domestic or sexual violence.

Providing equal access to safety and other services for women with disabilities and Deaf women requires collaboration and cross-learning among local agencies that serve people with disabilities and local agencies that serve victims of domestic and sexual violence. ASI works throughout the country to foster this collaboration and help criminal justice personnel and social service providers.

 End Abuse of People with Disabilities website

Vera launched its End Abuse of People with Disabilities website on the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is the first website exclusively dedicated to ending abuse of people with disabilities, and serves as a resource for victim and disability service providers, self-advocates, and policymakers.

The site aims to:

  • raise awareness of the prevalence of abuse against people with disabilities;
  • enhance services for people who have been victimized;
  • foster accountability for those responsible for abuse;
  • strengthen prevention efforts; and
  • increase research on the issue and evaluation of potential solutions.

The website also includes:

  • A first-of-its-kind interactive and searchable map of all people, programs, and projects across the country working in this area; and
  • best practice materials each of these projects has created.

Through these online resources, Vera encourages people working in the area of abuse and disability to use the map to build relationships and share resources.

The website was developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women.
