Victims want alternatives to traditional justice system responses.

In 2016, the Alliance for Safety and Justice issued the first-ever National Survey of Victims’ Views on Safety and Justice, which found surprisingly consistent opinions across multiple demographic groups of victims of crime: they want alternatives to prison to hold people accountable and prefer investment in prevention and rehabilitation over spending on jails and prisons.ASJ, Crime Survivors Speak, at 4, 13.

This survey provided a baseline for the follow-up project in 2017 exploring whether victims’ preferences matched the new administration’s stated priorities on criminal justice.ASJ, “Crime Survivors’ Views On Trump Administration’s Criminal Justice Agenda,” August 1, 2017.
