Melissa Calixte

Melissa is a bail assessment specialist with Vera’s Greater Justice New York initiative. Her work primarily supports the Bail Assessment Pilot, which provides arraignment judges the necessary individualized financial information to factor a person's ability to pay into the court’s bail decision. Throughout the week, Melissa alternates between arraignment courts in the Bronx and Queens County and accepts referrals in cases where the judge will likely set bail. Using Vera’s Bail Calculator, Melissa analyzes participants’ monthly disposable income to determine the amount and form of bail they would be able to afford. After confirming the amount with the participant, Melissa conveys the assessment to the judge on the record.

Prior to joining Vera, Melissa worked at Safe Horizon as a domestic violence advocate at the 69th and 9th precincts, and as a data coder at the New York City Criminal Justice Agency. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Berkeley College and currently attends Walden University to pursue a Masters in Forensic Psychology.
