On July 22, Mayor Bloomberg signed an executive order requiring all city agencies to provide language assistance in six foreign languages to New Yorkers who do not speak English well. In 2007, the Translating Justice project in Vera’s Center on Immigration and Justice (CIJ) worked with law enforcement agencies in three states on a similar effort to improve communication with limited English proficient (LEP) communities. The report on that project, Overcoming Language Barriers, offers strategies for making law enforcement services more accessible to these communities. CIJ also worked with criminal justice practitioners in New York City to develop criminal justice glossaries in Spanish and Chinese.
Vera established an office in Washington D.C., to bring its unique expertise more directly to bear on important national policy debates related to the administration of justice.
