Juvenile Justice That is Safe and Smart

New York City’s courts began holding weekend arraignments for juveniles on May 31, 2008. At a press conference announcing this reform, Mayor Bloomberg also unveiled a new risk assessment tool, developed by the Vera Institute of Justice’s Center on Youth Justice, to help inform juvenile detention decisions. The city has implemented the tool alongside several alternative to detention (ATD) programs, also developed with the help of Vera’s Center on Youth Justice. The innovation has been cited in a recent New York Times article.
