Laura Negron Named Director of Vera's Guardianship Project

NEW YORK—The Vera Institute of Justice has named Laura Negrón as director of its Guardianship Project, an innovative program that courts can appoint to provide legal, social, and other support services to elderly and disabled people in New York City whom a judge has determined cannot care for themselves. As director, Negrón oversees a staff of lawyers, social workers, and financial managers.

Vera Launches the Center on Victimization and Safety

NEW YORK—The Vera Institute of Justice today announced the launch of its new Center on Victimization and Safety (CVS), which will work in partnership with government and nonprofit organizations to help people who experience domestic or sexual violence. CVS aims to prevent and address domestic violence, sexual assault, and related crimes by promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration and by advancing policies and practices that hold abusers accountable and help survivors to heal.

Vera announces creation of cost-benefit "knowledge bank": new national resource for cost-effective criminal justice planning

NEW YORK – The Vera Institute of Justice today announced the development of a national Knowledge Bank for Cost-Benefit Analysis in Criminal Justice to inform practitioners and policymakers about the budgetary impacts of criminal justice policy choices. The Knowledge Bank, a project of Vera’s Cost-Benefit Analysis Unit (CBAU), will provide decision makers with tools to help incorporate cost-benefit analysis into policy development.

Joel Levy Named Director of Development

Levy most recently served as New York regional director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations. A new report from Vera’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections finds that at least 22 states are cutting corrections budgets in response to the worst fiscal crisis in decades.

The Fiscal Crisis in Corrections: Rethinking Policies and Practices highlights the impact of these cuts and the innovative ways officials are seeking to reduce spending while maintaining—and in some cases enhancing—public safety. It is based on a survey of enacted FY2010 state budgets and recent legislation.

Eric H. Holder, Jr., attorney general of the United States, will deliver the Vera Institute of Justice’s third Annual Justice Address on Thursday, July 9, 2009.

Each year, Vera’s Annual Justice Address features a prominent national figure who explores important justice issues of our time. Previous speakers include Nicholas deB Katzenbach, attorney general under President Lyndon Johnson, and James B. Comey, deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush.

The topic of Attorney General Holder’s address will be announced closer to the event.

Annie Salsich Named Director of Vera's Center on Youth Justice
