WGNO reports on a plan the New Orleans Police Department has developed in collaboration with Vera's New Orleans Office: "Starting December 4th, Louisianians arrested for public intoxication can choose detox at the Odyssey House or jail time" at Orleans Parish Prison.
This option will be available to people who are charged only with public intoxication. WGNO's report calls the project and a potential sobering center in the future "a drastic change in how NOPD handles substance abuse" and says it may also save the city money.
