Today's Washington Post features a letter to the editor from Rodolfo Estrada, senior program associate with Vera's Center on Immigration and Justice. He wrote in response to an article that discussed how tough new immigration laws could make undocumented individuals less willing to report crimes they witness.

Referring to the National Immigrant Victims Access to Justice Partnership project, a collaboration between Vera and the nonprofit organization Legal Momentum, Estrada wrote, "Given tools and training, law enforcement personnel can address immigrant victims' fear of reporting crime and encourage collaboration with investigators."

The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. Its goals are to encourage use of the “U” nonimmigrant classification, known as the U-visa, to protect crime witnesses from deportation and improve public safety.
