The Times-Picayune reports on a pilot program that will launch in December, allowing New Orleans police officers to take intoxicated people to a short-term detoxification center instead of jail. Although the program falls short of a full-scale "sobering center," police will be able to use this option when the only charge against an individual is public intoxication. The program is expected to save costs associated with jail expenditures and time spent on arrests and booking, as well as encouraging treatment for those who may need more assistance.
