Times-Picayune, "Civil rights probes into New Orleans police shows strong federal investement in city's future"

The U.S. Department of Justice currently has eight separate investigations into the conduct of the New Orleans Police Department. The Justice Department may impose oversight on the department in the form of a consent decree, which would require specific changes to the police department's policies and practices and allow oversight from outsiders. A 2002 Vera report found that the consent decree imposed on the Pittsburgh Police Department made significant changes and improvements to the way the department operated.
