Today's Oklahoman includes a letter to the editor from Margaret diZerega, director of Vera's Family Justice Program, who responded to a story reporting on the findings of recent study from the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth about incarcerated mothers and their children:

What sets Oklahoma apart is that the Department of Corrections has taken creative steps toward its goal of reducing recidivism — especially by encouraging communication between incarcerated women and their loved ones and continuing this process after women return to the community. Research shows that incarcerated people who maintain supportive contact with their families have greater success on parole. Having worked in partnership with the DOC for years, I see Oklahoma’s commitment to that evidence and to families as a promising example for other states to follow.
