An op-ed from the New York Times cites Vera's recent report The Fiscal Crisis in Corrections: Rethinking Policies and Practices. The op-ed argues that policymakers need to change their approach to crime, giving up approaches that do not work and that increase prison costs—mandatory minimum sentences for example—and instead providing more effective, less expensive options—for example, rehabilitation and treatment for low-risk nonviolent drug offenders.
