A Gainesville Sun story discusses a proposal from some Flordia lawmakers that would allow early release of elderly prisoners who meet certain criteria. Florida, like many other states, is trying to reduce spending given its budget shortfalls. Tina Chiu, Vera's director of technical assistance who is leading Vera's Cost-Benefit Analysis Unit, was quoted in the story, saying, “There has been a very long-standing concern over the growth of older inmates in prison. There is this wave of financial problems that are making the concerns more urgent."
