A recent story on AlterNet.org discusses the perception of prison rape in popular U.S. culture. The story mentions Vera's work in helping the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) develop its standards and final report. The story also cites Michela Bowman, Vera's project director for the NPREC work, who said she has begun to see a shift in attitude toward prison rape in the form of more programs addressing the topic.
"I think this is a case where the change will move from the inside out, rather than from the outside in," Bowman said.
